The Peppermint View: Marketing Trends in 2019

Peppermint is a full service design and marketing agency based in Marbella, Malaga offering a complete range of marketing services, including graphic design, web design, digital marketing, corporate identity, event management and much more, so we’re always keen to keep an eye on upcoming trends in the marketing sphere. We have noticed that there is a handful of key marketing trends likely to dominate in 2019, so let’s take a look at them and what they could mean for your business.

A move away from traditional advertising

For some years now, we have known that a shift has been occurring in what the consumer trusts as a source of recommendation. Nielsen reported on the ‘trust’ issue back in 2015 and it appears that this is a trend that is staying with us. Consumers, when asked about their most trusted advertising sources, named the top four as personal recommendation, branded and editorial websites and reviews.

Adverts are near the bottom. According to Business Insider, some 30% of Internet users use ad blockers, especially on desktop and laptop computers, but they don’t use them nearly as much on smartphones and other mobile devices. This doesn’t mean we have to abandon conventional advertising completely, but ads do need to be more relevant for the consumer. This is why many brands are increasing their investment in content marketing and using influencers, as well as referral partnerships to add more value for the consumer.

    More creativity please!

We have to stop following like sheep. Currently there’s a massive trend towards digital everything, but this means there is an opportunity to buck the trend and do something different. One company, for example, collected customers’ addresses and posted them printed newsletters. It is an old school technique, but it worked. So what we will be looking at in 2019 are more creative ways to deliver messages that don’t simply follow what everyone else is doing.

The rise of voice search and digital assistant services

Customers want brands to communicate with them in a way they like and understand. For example, the advent of Alexa, Siri and voice-activated services means that this is likely to be a way forward in communicating, because as Campaign and ComScore suggests, by 2020 some 50% of all searches will be done using the voice search method. Furthermore, the technology for digital assistants is evolving and already they “are evolving to understand user intent and behaviours through available data and information to help consumers take actions.”

    Be human, authentic and helpful

Technology and automation is taking over in marketing, but customers remain human, no matter how much they engage with technology. Yes, technology helps with efficiency and cost savings in marketing efforts, but it can risk the loss of relationship with the consumer. When possible, provide the customer with opportunities for direct contact, or some form of help; the personal touch is still invaluable. That’s why at Peppermint we always make the effort to have regular face-to-face meetings with our clients, because this is the best way to build relationship and understand their needs and concerns.
