Noche de San Juan – 23rd June
Why this day?
The night of 23rd June, leading into the 24th June, is the shortest night of the year. In the northern hemisphere, the shortest night of the year also means that the light wins over darkness, according to pagan mythology. Traditionally, it is said that this is the perfect night to chase away bad spirits and to bring in good ones.
On the Noche de San Juan, friends and families head to a local beach to celebrate this festival with the local community. The most common traditions are building and lighting a bonfire, dancing around it and then jump in the water. But, you don’t have to do this to have a good night out.
The Elements of San Juan
Water
While some people go ahead and jump in the water, other prefer to simply wash their face, hands, and feet. It is said that going in the water will grant a person health and beauty for the entire year. And, if you jump backwards over nine waves, it is said that all negative energies will go away for the entire year.
When the sun first starts to come out at dawn that is when the water has most of its magic and can cure ills and purify your spirit.
Fire
It is said that jumping over this fire will give one protection through the entire year. People can also burn old memories by writing them on a piece of paper and throwing it into the fire. That way you can leave all the bad behind and start afresh.
A very important belief to remember is that you must not look in the mirror that night. You must wait until the morning after if you want your wishes to come true.
