Gibraltar Events in May

The Rock in May
We’re delighted to be working with many Gibraltar-based clients including Triay & Triay, The Caleta Hotel, Gibtelecom, Ibex Insurance, Callaghan Insurance, Masbro, TWI, Peninsula Underwriting, Imossi Shipping, Techtrolec plus others, so we like to keep abreast of what’s going on and up and coming events.

Gibraltar has always been a fascinating destination for many visitors who make it to southern Spain; I mean, who could resist visiting those cheeky monkeys. No. I don’t mean the Gibraltarians, they’re lovely people; I mean the famous macaque apes who live on the Rock. In recent years Gibraltar has developed a calendar of events to rival bigger places and if you’re looking for a music festival, Gibraltar is offering plenty of attractions this summer.

May Events

The Queen’s Commonwealth Baton Relay

On 10 May, the Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Commonwealth Baton Relay will reach Gibraltar from Malta. This race, which takes place over 288 days, is traditionally a curtain raiser for the Commonwealth Games. The current relay race was launched at Buckingham Palace on 9 October 2013. The baton contains a message from the Queen and when it arrives in Glasgow for the opening ceremony on 23 July, the Queen will read the message inside.

The baton arrives in Gibraltar on 9 May and on 10 May members of local sporting organisations will run through the streets with it. The ceremony starts from Casemates Square at 10.15am and finishes about 1.30pm back in Casemates Sq.

Music

Gibraltar gets the season off to a good start with the Reggae on the Beach Bob Marley tribute that starts at 9pm on 10 May and finishes at 3am on 11 May. Price of entry is £10 and this includes a Jamaican BBQ and a Reggae on the Beach cocktail.

From 15 – 18 May you can enjoy The Gib Fringe Festival. There’s flamenco fusion, a colourful cabaret by Tricity Vogue, a Johnny Cash tribute band and acts form Australia, Brazil and Ireland. Sunday is a special family day when you can watch a performance called “Globe Azul” that reminds us to take care of the magical planet we live on.

Opera lovers should go to A Celebration of Opera on 22 May. The venue is St. Michael’s Cave with performances by the Gibraltar Philharmonic Society. Tickets are available at Sacarello’s Coffee Shop in Irish Town.

Classic Cars

The Gibraltar Classic Car Rally 2014 is on 17 and 18 May. If like me you enjoy looking at classic cars that have been kept in pristine condition get down to Casemates Square for the start of this event that starts around 11.15 on Saturday 17th. Anyone taking part in the Rally can also enjoy a drive into Spain on the Sunday.

As you can see, there’s plenty to do in Gibraltar!
