Website Design: Perception is power

As the old saying goes ‘you should never judge a book by its cover’, but does the same theory apply to website design and layout?

Web experts would argue that in today’s technology-loving world the attention span of the average mouse-clicking consumer is getting shorter. Websites have on average five seconds to impress before the time conscious browser loses interest and clicks onto another, more eye-catching website. And with online business growing dramatically over the past few years savvy ‘etailers’ are increasingly sprucing up their websites to make sure they have a slice of the Internet shopping pie – and keeping ahead of the competition.

One of the most important things to remember is that websites are the 21st century shop window. Consumers who have swapped their shopping baskets for a comfortable chair and a mouse mat will want to see your goods or services presented in the best light possible. With this in mind there are a multitude of things to consider when building a website which include: the visual impact, ease of navigation around the site and clarity of text. Websites also have to be fully up to date and relevant to your business, as consumers can spot a rarely updated site a mile away.

Another big turn-off is shoddy presentation – web surfers will agree that there is nothing more unprofessional on a website than finding it has more spelling mistakes than a teenager’s diary or looks like your uncle designed it. It may seem like a lot to consider, but be sure that all this effort to build your online empire is likely to pay dividends according to a recent report by regulator Ofcom.

Latest figures show that more and more business across the bulk of sectors and industries is coming from online sources, and the starting point for much of it on company websites.

These patterns are growing and evolving all the time, so the good presentation, design, concept and text of a website also has to be matched to new technological and consumer trends such as the growing use of handheld devices as a means of accessing the Internet. For businesses this means adapting their existing sites to the practicalities of smaller screens and simpler buttons. In doing so you might lose some of the information and detail on your site, and have to invest time and effort to keep up with the latest trends, but you will gain access to a whole new market.
